Seen from directly above, the strip of sandbanks between Rameswaram and the Mannar coast reads as a single slow gesture across the water — a pale chain of stone drawn through deep indigo, with currents feathering away from it in fine white threads.
Setu at Low Tide is painted in granulating watercolour and gouache, letting the pigment pool, bloom and settle the way it does on cotton rag paper. The open sea is never a flat wash; it darkens and thins across the field, holding the composition down at the top so the bright sandbanks can carry the light. Up close you can see the tooth of the paper through the colour.
A quiet, deep piece. It sits best on a warm wall — lime plaster, clay, chalky off-white — where the cool blue has something to push against.
