The First Sermon in Bronze

A carved bronze relief brought to life on canvas — the Buddha seated at the centre in vitarka mudra, hand raised in the gesture of teaching, flanked by four disciples in quiet meditation. Above them, a canopy of blossoming branches spreads across the panel in dense, hand-worked detail, while a devotee kneels at the right with an offering vessel, her jewellery and drapery caught in the same warm metal light.

The surface reads as aged bronze: deep umber patina in the recesses, burnished gold catching along shoulders, cheekbones and folded robes. Light falls from a single soft source, so every plane of the carving holds its own gradient — glowing where it rises, shadowed where it sinks. Nothing is loud. The whole panel holds still.

Its horizontal proportion makes it a natural anchor above a low console, a sideboard, or a long sofa in a living room. It also suits an entryway wall where a single wide piece can set the tone for the whole home, or a meditation corner, study or reading nook where you want stillness rather than statement. The warm metallic tones sit beautifully against off-white, sand, clay and deep charcoal walls, and against furniture in brass, cane, stone or pale wood.
