Peony in Ember Light

A single peony opens at the centre of a near-black field, its petals moving from deep flame orange through apricot and gold into cool ivory, as though lit by a low fire just out of frame. Around it, blue-green leaves catch the same light along their edges, crimson blooms sink back into shadow, and small yellow buds rise on slender stems at either side — the composition held wide and low, the way a bloom might be seen across a long table.

The painting works in the Dutch still-life tradition but keeps a modern restraint: heavy shadow, one clear light source, and colour allowed to run hot at the centre and go quiet at the edges. Brushwork is smooth and blended, with soft veining in the petals and layered depth in the darks rather than flat black.

Suited to a wide wall above a sideboard, a low console, or the length of a bed. It reads best on a deeper or warmer wall — charcoal, clay, ink blue, or a soft putty — where the dark ground settles into the room and the bloom carries the light on its own.
